20-Year-Old Marine Dies in Solo-Vehicle Accident near Las Pulgas Road

SAN DIEGO, CA (June 27th, 2024) – Lance Cpl. Cristian Banuelos was killed early Saturday morning, and two were injured in a rollover crash on northbound Interstate 5.

The incident occurred at approximately 5:45 a.m., near Las Pulgas Road.

Per reports, the driver of a northbound black BMW 440I veered left and collided with the median guard rail. The exact circumstances leading up to the crash are still under investigation. The impact caused the BMW to overturn, striking a call box and a barbed wire fence.

Due to the extent of injuries sustained, the driver was pronounced dead at the scene. Capt. Virginia Burger of the Camp Pendleton-based 1st Marine Logistics Group identified the deceased driver as 20-year-old Lance Cpl. Cristian Banuelos.

Paramedics transported his 21-year-old male passenger to a hospital for treatment of significant injuries.

Additionally, Banuelos’ 19-year-old female passenger sustained minor injuries but declined further medical evaluation.

Authorities are asking anyone who witnessed the crash to contact their offices as soon as possible.
